By custom boutique instrument builders.
The tuner holes are pre drilled for you. The headstock has been thicknessed .The neck has been profiled. Front and side dot Position markers have been inlayed. A zero fret has been installed.
The rest of the fretboard has been slotted for you to a 23" scale lenght. There are 18 pre slotted fret positions.
This neck is not fretted except for a zero fret in the nut position.
To finish this you will need to install your own fretwire. , which should not be very difficult. The slots have already been cut for you , accurately using using the best templates and fret slotting saw available. All you need to do is tap Them in and trim flush. the fretboard has been surfaced to 400 grit to play buttery smooth.
The neck has been sanded to 320 grit , which is more than most factory produced guitars which are typically 220 .
if you wish too you can also give the neck a final sanding with fine grit sandpaper 400 grit or higher and finish
With a finish of your choice. Lacquer, poly , or a oil finish all work great and look fantastic.
I don't recommend further sanding or using any finish on the fretboard. it doesn't require finishing
Just a occasional conditioning with a fretboard conditioner or lemon oil once or twice a year is all thats necessary . there is 12" + from the end of the fretboard to the end of neck so it should easily accommodate any size box since very few exceed 12" with 8"- 10" being the most common sizes . You Can choose to trim off any excess if you like or leave it depending on the style you prefer to build.
if you have never built a instrument before this is a good way to begin and gain some valuable experience.
The hard work has already been done for you .
There are many sellers selling necks for cigar box guitars but mostly all feature cheap inexpensive low grade
Wood not adequately suited for building stringed instruments. This is grade A luthier grade tonewood.
Please note i also build all my guitar necks using whats call the scoop method for thicknessing the headstock.
I have never and will never use scarf jointed necks because they are extremely prone to breaking. This isn't my opinion it's a fact you can easily research for yourself just search broken headstock on YouTube and you will see 99.9% of all instruments with broken headstocks are scarf jointed. Know if you purchase a neck with a scarf joint it will be prone to breaking!
if your looking to build a quality instrument that looks great and sounds fantastic. something a step up in quality than the usual cheaply made with inferior box or hardware store sourced materials. Then you absolutely need to begin with quality tonewood.
